Strengthening Global IP Strategy and Legal Infrastructure for Commercialization Through Experience at Leading Technology Companies, Including HP and Illumina

SuperMatics Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Hyunsung TNC, announced the appointment of Bruce Wu, J.D., Ph.D., as its Chief Legal Officer (CLO). Wu brings extensive experience in legal and intellectual property strategy, corporate management, and business development at global technology companies. As a member of SuperMatics’ executive leadership team, he will oversee the company’s global legal and IP strategy and the development of its corporate governance framework.

SuperMatics is building a superconducting-materials development platform that combines physics-based theoretical models with artificial intelligence to support the entire development process, from the design of new superconducting materials to synthesis and process optimization. The company appointed Wu to strengthen its legal leadership as it expands co-development programs with global companies and research institutions, creates new intellectual property, raises capital in the United States, and advances commercialization.

Wu earned his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center and holds both a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also earned a B.A.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering with honors from the University of Toronto. Combining the technical expertise of a materials scientist with extensive legal and business experience, Wu has built a career translating complex technologies in advanced materials, artificial intelligence, life sciences, and other high-technology industries into effective intellectual property and business strategies.

Wu spent approximately four years at Illumina, a global genomics and life sciences technology company, where he served as Director of Global IP and led the development of major patent portfolios and global intellectual property strategies. He established IP frameworks aligned with Illumina’s markets and business objectives, expanded the company’s IP presence in Asia, and advised senior executives on strategic matters. His responsibilities also included global patent disputes, competitive patent analysis, freedom-to-operate assessments, and technology and IP due diligence for numerous mergers and acquisitions. He participated in IP due diligence for transactions exceeding $1 billion, gaining substantial experience in connecting technology assets with corporate value.

Before joining Illumina, Wu served as Patent Counsel and Portfolio Manager at HP Inc., where he managed the prosecution and registration of U.S. and international patents and oversaw global patent portfolios. He also supervised outside counsel and supported technology licensing, patent asset sales, and monetization transactions. This experience directly supports SuperMatics’ long-term strategy of not only protecting research and development results through patents, but also converting intellectual property into licensing opportunities and sustainable commercial value.

Wu also worked as an attorney, patent counsel, and patent agent at leading U.S. law firms, including Foley & Lardner and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman. During this period, he advised multinational technology companies and startups on U.S. and international patent portfolio development, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, technology licensing, IP transactions, corporate due diligence, and patent disputes. He also reviewed IP sales and licensing transactions involving advanced technology companies, further developing his expertise in global IP protection and commercialization.

He subsequently served in a range of executive roles at AI, advanced technology, and life sciences companies, including Chief Legal Officer, Corporate Secretary, Head of Legal and IP, and Head of Business Development. In these roles, he built legal functions and global IP strategies and advised companies on fundraising, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, data privacy, mergers and acquisitions, and IPO readiness.

Wu is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., as well as before the Supreme Court of the United States. He is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional for both the United States and Europe (CIPP/US and CIPP/E) and an Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP). His professional recognition includes IAM300, IP Corporate Star, Consero Exceptional GC Leadership, and Asian Leaders Worth Watching.

As Chief Legal Officer, Wu will lead SuperMatics’ global IP strategy to systematically protect and commercialize intellectual property arising from the company’s core theories and algorithms, experimental data, newly developed superconducting materials, and synthesis and process technologies. He is expected to play a central role in establishing the company’s global IP structure across the United States, Korea, and other jurisdictions, as well as defining ownership and commercialization rights for IP generated through collaborative research, technology licensing, and global commercialization initiatives.

Wu will also strengthen SuperMatics’ standard contractual framework for engagements with global companies and research institutions, including co-development agreements, nondisclosure agreements, research service agreements, technology transfer agreements, and licensing agreements. In addition, he will oversee the legal and regulatory infrastructure required to support the company’s growth, including corporate and IP due diligence for future financing, securities matters, board governance, equity compensation arrangements for shareholders and employees, data protection, and AI governance.

“Developing new superconducting materials requires the close integration of materials science, artificial intelligence, intellectual property, and global commercialization strategy,” Wu said. “Drawing on my experience in materials engineering and in advising global technology companies, I look forward to protecting SuperMatics’ core technologies and helping transform its research achievements into sustainable enterprise value and global business opportunities.”

Hyunchul Kim, CEO of Hyunsung TNC, said, “Bruce Wu is a highly accomplished professional who earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT and has built extensive experience in intellectual property strategy and technology commercialization at leading global technology companies, including HP and Illumina. His appointment represents an important milestone as SuperMatics strengthens its U.S.-centered global IP and corporate governance framework and accelerates co-development partnerships and fundraising initiatives with global companies and research institutions.”

SuperMatics plans to collaborate with global companies and research institutions to develop new superconducting materials and application-specific solutions through its physics-based AI platform. The company intends to expand its co-development, technology licensing, and long-term commercialization models based on the intellectual property generated through these programs.
